Treatment of Parkinson's disease

London, Dec 5 : Scientists from Dundee University have suggested that C. elegans worm might prove to be an effective research model for studying why some people develop Parkinson''s Disease.

Worms share 50pct of their genes with humans, including those involved with inherited Parkinson''s.

The team will study why the condition causes patient''s brain cells to die.

"Research leading to an eventual cure for Parkinson'' s disease is a daunting task and requires a very broad and multidisciplinary approach,” BBC News quoted lead researcher Dr Anton Gartner.

Polio

SV40 was the 40th virus found in rhesus monkey kidney cells when these cells were used to make the polio vaccine. This virus contaminated both the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) created by Dr. Jonas Salk and the Oral or “Live” Polio Vaccine (OPV) created by Dr. Albert Sabin.

In 1961, SV40 was discovered by Dr. Bernice Eddy of the National Institute of Health, Division of Biologics when she took the material used to grow polio vaccines and injected it into hamsters. Tumors grew in the hamsters. Her discovery was subsequently validated by Drs. Maurice Hilliman and Benjamin Sweet of Merck.

Upon the discovery that SV40 was an animal carcinogen that had found its way into the polio vaccines, a new federal law was passed in 1961 that required that no vaccines contain this virus. However, this law did not require that SV40 contaminated vaccines be thrown away or that the contaminated seed material (used to make all polio vaccines for the next four decades) be discarded. As a result, known SV40 contaminated vaccines were injected into children up until 1963. In addition, it has been alleged that there have been SV40-contaminated batches of oral polio vaccine administered to some children until the end of the 1990′s. (SV40

Insulin

Diabetes exacts its toll on many Americans, young and old. For years, researchers have painstakingly dissected this complicated disease caused by the destruction of insulin producing islet cells of the pancreas. Despite progress in understanding the underlying disease mechanisms for diabetes, there is still a paucity of effective therapies. For years investigators have been making slow, but steady, progress on experimental strategies for pancreatic transplantation and islet cell replacement. Now, researchers have turned their attention to adult stem cells that appear to be precursors to islet cells and embryonic stem cells that produce insulin.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a birth defect where the body just doesn’t produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar at normal levels. Type 2 Diabetes afflicts mostly people with excessive weight and the condition is characterized by the inability of the body to use insulin secreted by the pancreas. There is also a less common type of Diabetes – Gestational Diabetes – that occurs in women during the second half of pregnancy and disappears after delivery.

Symptoms of cholera

The symptoms of cholera include nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, and abdominal cramps leading to profound dehydration.

HIV/AIDS

What is also amazing about HIV is its viral complexity and ability to constantly mutate. As a result it is proving to be difficult to observe and understand, let alone to find ways of destroying it:

The genome of a single-strand RNA virus such as HIV, which comprises only 10,000 nucleotides, is small and simple compared with that of most cells. Yet from a molecular standpoint, it is unimaginably complex. Each of those nucleotides contains one of four possible bases: adenine, uracil, guanine or cytosine. The unique sequence specified by the genome of HIV therefore represents just one choice out of 4 10,000 possibilities -- a number roughly equivalent to a one followed by 6,000 zeroes (Eigen, 1993 p. 42).

sexually transmitted diseases

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. When transmitted through sexual contact, the bacteria can infect the urinary and reproductive organs.

The term chlamydia typically refers to Chlamydia trachomatis, the STD. But two other types of this bacteria also can lead to illness: Chlamydia pneumoniae, which can be spread through coughing and sneezing, and Chlamydia psittaci, which birds can pass to humans.

Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics. But in many cases, it causes no symptoms, so people can be infected without even knowing it. If chlamydial infections go untreated, they can lead to more serious health problems, such as infertility. So it's important to take the precautions to prevent chlamydia, and if it's suspected, to seek treatment as soon as possible.
